On Wednesday in Wyman, Maine, Mildred Luce looked out her window and saw a bobcat attacking her pet cat, Smudge. Running to the rescue, she grabbed a snow shovel on the way out the door and, by the time she reached the bobcat, it had Smudge's head in its mouth. So she whacked the attacker with the shovel, but it held on. "Then I took hold of the bobcat's head and tail and pulled," she said, "and out popped Smudge." Today Smudge is recovering from his wounds. The bobcat was later shot and tested negative for rabies. Mrs. Luce, the lady who coolly grabbed a wildcat by the tail, is 90.
