They are chickens, but even chickens want to live, and don't want to be slaughtered, and don't want to experience terrible pain as they are killed. Since a lot of people have exactly the reaction of "Yo they're chickens" - that's why some people try to compare the chicken to something an anthrocentric person can relate to. People who have little compassion for food animals may have enough compassion for humans that they can understand the problem if it is put in the context of human suffering.

It's the very "Yo they're chickens" thing that pushes people to find novel ways to reach people. Interestingly I think it's the same thing that pushes people over the edge in the abortion debate (where there are also extreme actions and ideas pushed)- "Yo, it's a blastocyst" has the same effect on the right, that "Yo They're chickens" has on animal rights folks.

Know what I mean?
