Z, I didn't realize that the Gospels were NOT written when he was alive, or even by his contemporaries.

The Gospels weren't written while Jesus was alive. This much is agreed upon by everyone, believer and non-believer alike.

However, the notion that the Gospels were written by anyone else besides Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John is a fantasy born out of the post-modernist double-standard against Christianity. The mountains of evidence supporting the traditionalist viewpoint is dismissed as hearsay and legend, while the shreds of evidence supporting whatever wacky theories the skeptics can think of are held up to close scrutiny simply because it goes against the "Christian grain."
