>>unless they have believed the Liberal spin over the years.

Maybe it's YOUR "Colonel Blimp" spin that influences us. I must admit I take you as his mouth-piece here.

In the political, business and social worlds "charisma" for lack of a better word is "people's perception of competency and honesty and sincerity". Hence the desire for a "charismatic leader". Much to your chagrin obviously.

So for your benefit it can be restated that Mr. Harper is not perceived as competent, honest (hiding extreme right wing agenda) or sincere (french agenda; martimes comments etc.) leader.

"Until Harper shows otherwise" ... is that better to be thought a fool than speak up and prove it?

People might want more. If you are looking for a replacement for a scandal ridden politician ... people tend (in the short term) to be once bitten twice shy and need more than "until proven otherwise". Harper is an untested leader (party merger aside) but carries "leader's style baggage" see second paragraph.

To ascribe doubt of Harper's ability to believing Liberal spin is being as narrow minded as you are accusing those who can't embrace Harper as a interNATIONAL leader. As is splitting hairs on etymology. It is most unlikely that you possess the intellectual monopoly on interpreting partisan political spin.

Remember

Perception does not define existence! Unless you are running for office!

"All I want is competency and honesty and sincerity. Until Harper shows otherwise, by leading a government for several years, I can't see how people are so negative towards him,,"

With all due respect Stephen, I don't wish to have an apprentice running my country, and I would prefer to have at least a tiny comfort that he is competent and honest, prior to electing him.

Much damage can be done in several years.

It's not enough that i may think Harper would do a good job, or do the least worst job of the available choices, it is also necessary that he is able to convince a whole lot of other people that he will do a good/least-worst job ... charisma wouldn't be the exact term for that ability, probably, neither would be 'popularity' imho

Trust, that's probably the best word ... you have to trust them on honesty in the corruption front, trust them to not get too radical on some whacko policy front, and trust their competence to carry on general government in reasonably efficient and fair manner in the meantime .... but for them to even get there, you have to trust their ability to sway a plurality of voters, their electability ... this becomes yet more important when they don't have the best-oiled machine in the race

Not that i think Harper doesn't have electability, relatively speaking, just musing on the possibility ... it would be good to hear from Sofa and Gulo on all this ... it's such a messy business, democracy, eh
