Al, What do you think of the implications of this little tid bit?

Sacrifice one life (an "embryo") to save another? Sounds like "Extreme Measures" to me.

Specter was joined at a news conference by Sens. Orrin Hatch of Utah, a conservative Republican, and Diane Feinstein of California, a liberal Democrat. The three said their bill would make reproductive cloning, to produce a baby, a crime punishable by up to 10 years.

But they do want to allow for "therapeutic cloning"

In principle I have a lot less problem with reproductive cloning than I do with "therapeutic cloning". In the first case you let the new life develop, in the 2nd you destroy it.

There are however real and potential practical problems with reproductive cloning. The most serious of which is IMO that (at least as I understand it) using current techniques, a cloned animal (including humans when they eventually get cloned) is more likely to have certain defects or disorders. If I'm wrong about that, or if I'm right but new techniques come in to fix the problem than I don't have a huge issue with reproductive cloning.

There are potential social issues with cloning as well but they are not enough IMO to justify anything like a 10 year jail sentence.
