I do not trust the government- so if you think that this applies to me "What has the gov't done in the last 22 years that would make you want to trust them?" you have made an error. I cannot speak for people who do- but I do understand a bit about belief, having watched many people believe many things. I do not believe in God, and see no evidence for God, yet I can understand how people might believe in God, and I no longer call people who do stupid (or even think that people who put their trust in God to solve large problems are irresponsible). It's a different way of looking at the world. I do not really understand it, because it seems illogical to me, but much that humans do seems illogical- so what's new?

What you or I do probably seems very wise and correct to us, that is why we do it. What we believe, also, I'm sure, seems correct- and that is why we believe it. But I think it can be helpful to realize that perfectly good people, who are not stupid, just different, could and do come to completely different conclusions about how to live their lives, based on different beliefs. I'm not sure they are irresponsible to believe in social security- especially not if they've seen family members living on it (as many people have). It might seem more far fetched to believe in the stock market.

Our family is doing what you are doing, and we are providing for ourselves- my only disagreement with you is about how you view people who do not act as you do, and believe as you believe.
