We had a steer butchered last year & we bought 1/4 of it. Ate on it for a year for $330. I wonder if that was considered a free range steer. It lived in a pasture behind my brother's house.

I would agree with you completely if I bought meat from supermarkets, or ate beef at Mc Donalds, or ate beef at lower quality restaurants, which did not offer range fed. I don't believe we've eaten a burger since mad cow turned up in England, and it's been so long since I bought supermarket beef I can't remember when it was- 4 or 5 years ago? I think I bought some range fed buffalo steaks at Whole Foods last year. You could argue that it's worse to eat happy cows, or buffalos, but I think having a miserable life AND a miserable end, is worse than having a happy life and a miserable end (assuming the end is miserable- I'm hoping the slaughtering facilities of range fed animals are superior, but I've no reason to think that, which is why I eat it rarely.) But that's just my opinion- and I don't think people are "bad" people because they don't eat the way I do.

Thanks for clarifying this. It was nice.
