The language group designated 'semitic' cannot have branches within it? ... you better tell all those people who think it can, quick before they get too much further astray ... already they divide it into north-east semitic and west semitic at least, possibly more one suspects ... if memory serves, canaanite they consider to be a subset of the north-east flavour, and aramaic possibly its sister within that subset ... memory getting fuzzy at that point, however, gee i wish michael would tell you to supply some links
