Hehe I liked that book. "Ray Kurzweil has written about spiritual machines." My AI professor Dr. Meghabghab knew him, but I have some bad news about my professor - he helped do research GOOG used for searching algorithms portal.acm.org one of his many papers - now professor Meghabghab was a smart man, very intelligent, living in the matrix with Neo you know - one day he didn't show up for class, then he didn't show up the next day - well his wife Dania left him and we found out the good Dr was down at the local county jail witnessing to the convicts for Jesus and he had seen the soul of God and saw what was coming. He quit teaching and became a walking preacher man - this confused me - and even knowing there is a fine line between genius and insanity there was nothing to predict the man was insane - later he joined some cult church and tried to get me in that - well anyways he came to his senses a year later and got back into teaching and researching again. Now he gave up positions at very prestigous places like MIT so that he could find a university that would employ his wife too - for he was a dedicated family man - she hurt his career - and he sacrificed a lot for her, and when she tore his heart out - I think it all hit him what all he gave up for a useless emotion that she did not reciprocate and he wanted to find that somewhere. Long story short, even the mentals are going to act irrationaly when it comes to love - why did god create man is an old question? To be loved - how is love going to translate into AI - what purpose does it serve. How did one of the top AI people in the country - maybe one of the top in the world succumb to such basic sillyness? It has always been a mystery to me about my professor.
