I am not as shocked by the sponsorship scandal as I am about Canadian's reactions to it.

It's as though Canadians are not all that surprised at the level of corruption in our government. "After all, we handed them absolute power, and power corrupts. It's quite simple, really. Shame on them for getting caught. Let's see if the Martin can weasel his way out of this one. If he can, he is fit to govern. If he can't, well maybe he's not fit to play in the big leagues."

I, for one, don't think corruption has to be an accepted part of politics or any other part of our society. It has to be fought on all fronts. Fire, not just Martin, but the whole government. Fresh blood is more trustworthy.

Canada's placement on the Corruption Perception Index dropped from near the top to 7th in 2001 and 12th in 2004. I look forward to the 2005 report with trepidation.
