I think it would work, a little energy consumption would go a long ways. People could simply do all their shopping in one round trip rather than get all the stuff one piece (and one trip) at a time. A 10% reduction of miles driven in the US would drop world wide demand by 1%, which would be a huge impact in these times of relatively close supply and demand. But judging by the traffic here in Houston, high gas prices seem to have the opposite effect, there seems to be more traffic and congestion than ever before. Oh well, I guess the speculators and hedgies have the oil market in their pocket, even with 5% greater gasoline stocks this time of the year compared to last year, yet only a 2% increase in demand over the same time period. Strange times indeed.
