Hello EP, You ask good questions, and here are some ponderings in response.

<<... Okay, why would China choose to ally itself with Russia and India ?>>

... because one needs to ally oneself with those who are willing, as opposed to those who are pushing one away.

<<India is likely to compete to some degree with China>>

... I have always thought that the Himalaya is tall enough as a barrier that would temper issues between India and China; and they have no fundamental reasons to be at odds. The few square meters of useless land was simply an excuse for a fight, of no consequence otherwise.

<<Russia has a deep fear of China because of the demographic discrepency...>>

... Yes, very much so, and therefore they must be in an alliance; the Chinese is more aware of this issue than anyone in Russia and has bent backward to make the Russians feel at ease.

<<It would be in China's best interest to ally with _____________>>

... I take it you do not mean Tobago :0?

Yes, that would be also quite obvious, and if one just stop to ponder a layer deeper, that alliance is in fact "just is" however folks may feel about it -

China makes, US buys;
China finances, US borrows;
US invests, China builds;
China expands use of energy, US keeps it all flowing;
US will be able to keep less and less of peace, China will be able to guard more and more of the same;
...

It is simply that simpletons on both continents do not see the apparent, realize not the obvious, and instead live in a fantasy world believing a winner can be in any conflict.

Calling these simpletons morons would be too generous, and too much a waste of time.
