Population growth in the third world has gapped tremendously in the past 50 years, where all the disease and crime and low education is - the spawning ground of depravity and terrorism, not the place we needed human capital growth - in the developed world it has been almost non existant.

I agree there are limits to the NUMBER of people

But from a global planning standpoint - wouldn't the policymakers and economic people of yesteryear have predicted that growing lots of human capital in poor starving 3rd world was not so smart? As el matador said, the natural instinct of the poor woman is too breed lots of children in case several die - but then I read the life history of saddam hussein and his days as a little boy and wonder why we need to grow human capital in such environments.

I hear aids got started in one of these bad places and then spread into the ivory towers. I watch the old movie metropolis and don't understand why modern man thinks we can isolate ourselves from the bad things born in underprivaledged areas and how world planning is not embraced more heavily - perhaps it is too simplistic a view - but here in my city in florida they want you to clean up all the old tires and kiddie pools that would have stagnate water and let mosquitoes breed - but then I look at the swamps all around me and wonder maybe if they are pennywise and pound foolish while I beat back the hordes of bloodsuckers everyday??

Someone here told me the smart educated muslims got over run by the barbarians when they just were too many in number - did Rome suffer this problem - looking at the first chart seems there are LOTS of barbarians breeding out there setting the stage for the toppling of the ivory towers.

What's more, the explosion of human population over the last few millenia has drastically reduced the population of most other life forms (above the level of bacteria etc.). There is no reason to believe that this trend will reverse. We have selected a very small number of species to cultivate for our uses: some cereals and other food plants, cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, ducks, some fish species, pine trees, eucalypts. Other species are casually driven to extinction.

Whether or not this reduction in the diversity of life on the planet is a bad thing may be an aesthetic judgement. For some religious loonies, it is simply carrying out the biblical injunction to go forth and multiply. For these nutters, the more human beings the better - unless they are not Christians, of course, in which case they are a threat until converted or eliminated.

My position? I'd prefer a world with fewer humans (especially religious nutters) and more of the other life forms.
