R. D., Ah, yes, the Pintos. I have a 1968 Cougar XR-7. After the exploding Pinto stories kept right on a'comin', I checked my own gas tank when I was parked next to a Pinto. The configuration is identical. Only difference is that I think the Cougars sport a lot more weight and steel and a much more effective rear bumper and their doors probably have much better buckle resistance.

The day my co-worker's Mazda exploded, he had been on his way to work. So, here he is, in my office, talking on the telephone with his Mazda dealer. Then he starts calling other Mazda owners he finds in the classifieds to ask why they are selling their new Mazdas. Those conversations were unintentionally hilarious. Bob Newhart had NOTHING on my friend with the former Mazda. Trouble is, my friend was in much pain and was dead serious in his inquiries. Finally, I had to get up in leave my office, lest I burst into gales of laughter. Under the circumstances, it was the kindest thing I could do for him. - Holly
