<< Prices get high enough, people will buy more efficient vehicles or cut back driving.>>

Perhaps by then it will be too late? Perhaps it's already too late. The world has a finite amount of oil.And we're running out fast...Had we been forced to conserve oil ten years ago we might have had time to find new energy sources.

This same attitude has been taken towards other natural resources. Resulting as prices rise more and more effort is put into squeezing the last drop. Then Bingo! we have none. Supply drops offa cliff. What we gonna do then?

The old let the mkt take care of things duzn't work when supply is finite......Econ 101

The US government has legislated gas mileage for DECADES....what is not to support....?
they legislate seat belts, gas tanks, airbags and a host of other safety devices in our automobiles....WHY?
because without them we'd all have more relatives and children dying.....the car companies don't give a rats ass about you or yours....only the people that have SUED these mega machines to show that they KNOW what saves lives has been put in the trash can by executives that compared their costs to killing large amounts of people....and the figures showed them it was cost effective to kill people instead of instituting SAFETY....
So as to the entire US economic scene, the legislature has knowingly allowed ( under massive Detroit money and influence) to allow what are actually cARS (since 50% of all sales are for SUV's for over a decade) to be classified as TRUCKS.....which they no longer are. They are cars....and have been allowed to POLLUTE our air and use excessive amounts of fuel far too long.
