Harper's support for Bush's Iraq war is hardly a "military misadventure". Conservatives are what they are, and post 911 the rhetoric was fierce. The Iraq war is a Bush/Blair event, and Bush has won re-election in spite of it, and by all accounts, even the British socialist Blair is cruising to victory. If the Socialist Blair strongly supported the war, why would not a Canadian conservative be inclined in the same direction. In the Anglo world, (including Australia), Canada's stance was out of step, although correct in my opinion.

The war in Iraq was not at all just a Conservative proclivity.

Actually, I do doubt that we would be in Iraq if Harper were in power then. In discussions with people close to Harper et al (I've never met the man myself), the prime issue was how we strung along the Americans for months and then snubbed them. Not going into Iraq wasn't bad policy - pissing off the U.S. for no reason was bad policy. The general consensus among conservatives was that we couldn't afford to go in anyway because we were fully committed in Afghanistan.

My interpretation of the whole mess is that Chretien thought he could get mileage out of Liberal anti-americanism. The decision not to go into Iraq was made for us by limited resources (as well as international legal commitments).

(BTW, it is Conservative MPs that are seeking intervenor status in the Montana BSE court case. No one hears about it, but I'd rather have MPs fighting for Canada in the trenches with reason than grandstanding with the emotional vitriol coming from Ottawa.)

<Please correct me if I am wrong, did not Harper express shame that Canada had not joined "our Southern neighbour in their hour of need" in their Iraqi adventure ?>

Exact... this is one reason what I will not vote for him. In fact, who am I gonna vote for ???
