The story is suspect but at least there is a historical record of Mohammad's existence. After all, he led several battles between Mecca and Medina. Now that sounds very real.

Did he, or is it just Islamic lore that says he did?


First, I don't know for sure if there is secular proof. I would have to research it. However, I suspect he did exist because the line of Caliphs that came after him were directly tied/related to him.....at least at first. When the Muslims decided to name someone outside the Mohammad line,it lead to the fight and Islamic schism that resulted in two different sects, the Shi'ites and Sunnis.

Secondly, Mohammad existed roughly 600 years after the death of Jesus. Historical records had improved dramatically by then......in fact, man was on the verge of mass producing books....I think that was in 800 BCE/AD.
