I don't see why you would be amazed. Whether the atheists claims was 100% verifiably true, or total BS, either way or anything in between, most people don't think about it much. Unless their experts in biblical archeology or take historical accounts of Jesus as a particular interest they are unlikely to really have given the issue the level of thought needed to counter someone who has made a campaign of arguing against the historical existence of Jesus and/or Nazareth. The person arguing against would be focused on the topic and well prepared. Most people, religious or not, Christian or not, would not be. He's made himself an expert on his claims, they have not.


If you are an aerospace design engineer, usually you are prepared to explain how a plane flies and why the design facilitates that capability. Similarly, I would think a man of God should be able defend against such an accusation. But maybe that's just me.
