Hello Mq,
I meant to type 1948 to 1952 because that's the period I am confident of. I was young and had many many friends there also young and we all agreed that the Communist Party would lead us to a wonderful new China. After about 1952 things began to deteriorate and people no longer spoke frankly to each other, etc. After 1952, paradoxically the real opposition of intellectuals to the Communist Party began, only as a result of the repression. That's why I say the repression was unnecessary.
Chinese people aren't dumb. There's no clonesville thinking there, either now or then. People learned quickly not to reveal their real thoughts. A party member, still intent on the cause, would not notice any opposition. So if you have no long term friendship with a person in China you won't know their real thoughts.
