BE Aerospace Swings to First-Quarter Profit From Year-Ago Loss on Strong Sales

WELLINGTON, Fla. (AP) -- BE Aerospace Inc., a leading maker of aircraft cabin products, on Monday reported a first-quarter profit versus a year-ago loss, led by strong sales in its distribution and business jet segments.

The company also projected demand from non-U.S. airlines would continue to drive strong results for the rest of the year.

BE Aerospace, which makes items like airplane seats, oxygen systems and other cabin equipment, reported earnings of $4.1 million, or 7 cents per share, compared with a prior-year loss of $7.6 million, or 21 cents per share.

Wall Street's average forecast was for profit of 5 cents per share, based on a survey of six analysts by Thomson Financial.

Sales for the quarter rose 12 percent to $196.5 million.

BE Aerospace said bookings for the quarter rose 36 percent to $255 million over the year-ago quarter, while its backlog climbed 48 percent to a record $760 million.

Looking ahead, the company said it was "confident" in its outlook and said it expects to report strong quarterly earnings comparisons this year, driven by expanding margins and improved product mix.

For 2005, the company projected earnings of about 50 cents per share, on revenue growth of about 10 percent, driven by "substantially" expanded margins in the commercial aircraft segment, strong sales and margin expansion in the business jet segment, and robust revenue and earnings growth in its distribution segment. It also forecast a double-digit increase in its backlog.

For 2006, BE Aerospace forecast earnings per share of about $1 per share, on double-digit revenue growth.

Analysts currently project earnings of 50 cents per share for 2005, and 98 cents for 2006.
