Dell Seen As Long-Term Risk To Cisco
05.09.05, 9:42 AM ET

Credit Suisse First Boston reiterated an "outperform" rating on Cisco Systems (nasdaq: CSCO - news - people ) and concluded that Cisco "continues to present one of the most attractive risk-reward investment profiles in the communications infrastructure industry." The research firm expects the manufacturer to report fiscal third-quarter earnings per share and revenue in line with estimates on Tuesday. "We would be surprised if Cisco was able to avoid any of the softness that plagued so many of its smaller competitors," the research firm said. However, it expects Chief Executive John Chambers to be optimistic on guidance: "Chambers stated that Cisco continues to gain share in most of the markets in which it participates, that 'innovation is back' and that IT managers are shifting to a more 'offensive' networking approach rather than seeking to simply minimize cost." CSFB also sees marginal improvement in Cisco's European business and added, "we expect to see a recovery in Cisco's routing business from depressed January second quarter levels as the new Integrated Service Routers (ISRs) continue to ramp and pull through additional security and VoIP revenues." CSFB did point out a long-term risk to watch out for--Dell (nasdaq: DELL - news - people ). "[W]e learned that Dell is looking to introduce ten new enterprise networking platforms over the balance of calendar 2005," CSFB said. "Notwithstanding Dell's historic lack of meaningful traction in enterprise networking, we think Cisco needs to be vigilant given Dell's demonstrated ability to extend its powerful business model beyond computers." Addressing Cisco's long-term outlook CSFB said, "Cisco is the best-positioned company to address two of the largest trends in communications infrastructure," and that its balance sheet remains unrivaled "with the exception of Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people )."
