From the Gospels, they were expecting Jesus to drop back in at any moment. Since that would be an event with some degree of finality, they probably figured the best use of their time would be to convert as many people as possible instead of sitting down with a ghost writer and pumping out a best seller. When it started to be clear that the final event wasn't imminent and that they might not be alive to see his return, then they started writing...


That is very strange. To think that someone would go through all that.......get born in a manger, grow up as a carpenter, trudge around the countryside preaching goodness, die a horrific death on a cross etc so that he could come back in say 15 years and end the world. Why would he have bothered?
