What the heck does it matter whether Hitler was "left" or "right?"

It only matters to those who want to see him on "the other's" side. Fanatic libs or GOPs cannot sleep unless they have AH firmly locked up in the other camp!

Re: What the heck does it matter whether Hitler was "left" or "right?"

I agree that there is a serious level of absurdity on this topic today. What is happening is that the nervous Bush propagandists are using Goebbels/Orwell/Luntz techniques to try to convince the dimmed-down public that "War is Peace", "Slavery is Freedom" and "Up is down." (In Rovian rhetoric, George Bush is a "good Christian gentleman". Hehe.)

The amazing thing here is that Bush supporters are so completely unhinged from reality that they actually argue with sincerity that Hitler was a "leftist", simply because they understand that their leader, George Bush is correctly described as a right-wing extremist and they are understandably nervous that the inevitable comparisons of Hitler's and Bush's methods and goals will not play well in Peoria.

The Bush handlers correctly understand that Hitler has a bad reputation in the U.S., while right wing extremism is so abstract that there isn't the sort of visceral hatred of the right wing that ought to be occurring in a democracy. Thus, they really want to create a totally false image of who Hitler was in order to try to prevent the public from getting that idea that Bush is Hitler.

It is important for this not-at-all subtle message to get through.

Bush loves torture.
Hitler loved torture.

Bush loves the rich.
Hitler loved the rich.

Bush hates Muslims.
Hitler hated the Jews.

Bush steals from Muslims.
Hitler stole from the Jews.

These are the comparisons that Frank Luntz and Karl Rove hope Americans never, ever understand.
