No tactic will ever deter every murder. Nobody ever argued that. But the death penalty deters murders in a number of ways. Since 12% of murders are committed by perpetrators with previous murder convictions, I view post murder deterrence as a tangible benefit of CP.

Serial killers is one class that applies.

Add violent pedophiles to that list.

Those two guys who killed the two girls in Florida should have their guilt established at trial, then be taken out to the town square for drawing and quartering.
