I believe you believe what you write. I think that you missed my point however regarding my point that you need to have popular support to continue a war for any length of time. Support fell apart in vietnam because of our governments dishonesty. But still with Nixon we had a chance to make it work and wound up leaving with our tail between our legs anyway.
In iraq there is still hope for success. Opinion on the ground from the military and press is often starkly different. In cases like this, the answer usually lies somewhere in the middle and to me in iraq it is clear that there are both good and bad things going on. 5 years from now if we are in the same situation on the ground you will be spewing the same stuff but you will have lost the support of the american people who have no stomach for this going forward. So if we are to be at all realistic, we must start thinking of the best way to exit over the next year or two. If we dont the republicans will start to lose and we will get a not so good exit strategy by necessity. So perhaps a timeline works best for the US as well as for the iraqis whose fire needs to be lit. Mike
