Kerry was defamed by a slanderous smear campaign attacking his honesty, war service and patriotism. It was 100% lies but the Bush campaign didn't care. They fight dirty. That's how they always win. Always have.

Bush also used phony terrorist alerts a half dozen times in the months leading up to the election, every time Kerry pulled ahead in the polls, Bush would exploit terrorist fears to try and scare people into changing leadership.

The country is evenly split. Since the election Bush's approvals have dropped sharply. It's that 5-10% in the middle who decide everything and they are not happy with Bush and DElay right now.
