The story was started by the Editor of Barnes Review News (at least according to the story that American Spirit quoted). The Barnes Review was named after a historian, who among other things, argued that WWII was not Hitler's fault - but the British. He also argued that Allied atrocities outweighed anything Nazi Germany did. In the Review's archive is an article that argues Hitler deserved the Nobel Peace Prize.

The author of the Rove story has referred to David Duke in another story as a "leading European-American rights activist".
