You still might want to consider taking the ferry, if you are willing to accept it as a mode of transportation and don't need the cushier aspects of cruise ship life. Bunkbed sleeping, cafeteria eating, nobody bothering you unless there are too many native kids running pellmell around the forward lounge.

The ferry system probably does not appreciate the publicity. It's supposed to be transportation for Alaskans. dot.state.ak.us

Ionesco, I had been planning to take an Inside Passage cruise a few years ago, but then heard that the cruise ships are doing a lot of damage to the Alaskan environment. They are all crowded up there, jammed together, and the whole experience has little to do with the natural beauty of Alaska and a lot to do with your regular cruise experience of cheesy entertainment and mostly mediocre food. There are a couple of companies that offer small ships with a lot more exposure to naturalists and less you-could-be-anywhere! cruise ship stuff. However, because the boats are smaller, there can be more seasickness. I was also told by someone to avoid all ship travel up there except at the height of the cruise season, because the waters can be very rough earlier and later. Of course, the bargains are to be found on the cruises during the rough water dates. And there are some land excursions that looked really rich and wonderful.
