The point is to track growth by means of a proxy, but understand things like how energy efficiency is changing and why, implications for future energy demand, effect on pollution etc... he is going to have to narrow things down a bit, but the existing studies he has uncovered aren't as sophisticated as for other countries so there is plenty of scope. Clearly there is a LOT of interest in this issue going forward too.

Copper production in China increased really massively in recent years, quite amazing. I got the data because I was looking at sulfur emissions in China.
