Anyone who confuses data from NAR with the data from the Census Bureau is either reading too quickly or not checking the data first hand. They do this because they have less interest in examining what is actually happening than they do in supporting their current view point.

I think the biggest mistake I see over and over on SI is that people take these headline numbers and then look at them superficially, not going going back to the original data sources and doing their own math to see if they actually make any freakin sense. The most important attribute you need to have in examining data is neutrality, if you aren't completely neutral to the outcome you will always find what you want to find.
