08:20 AMAT Applied Materials: Laser Anneal Tool Intro on Horizon; Already Two beta Tools in the Field, Including One at IBM -- Moors & Cabot (15.00 )

Moors & Cabot's checks suggest that AMAT is rapidly closing the gap on Ultratech in terms of laser anneal offering. The firm notes that AMAT licensed UTEK laser anneal technology in 2001, however, canceled the project in late 2002/early 2003. The firm believes in the last year, AMAT has come out with a newly designed laser anneal tool, as recently some of the integration challenges associated with implementation of laser anneal to device manufacturing has been resolved. The firm is somewhat surprised by the progress AMAT has made in such a short period of time. The firm increasingly believes laser anneal could be adopted as a manufacturing process at 45nm technology node rather than at 65nm. The firm now believes AMAT is likely to maintain its dominant R.T.P. market share with help from this new offering.
