Two years in a prison camp leaves its mark. Not to mention the 300 mile mid-winter forced march when the Germans moved the prisoners to another camp. I wouldn't say he came through unscathed; he's just not a whiner.

Ten members of his crew of eleven survived the flak that brought them down. About fifteen years ago, Dad learned of the heroic acts of one of his crew members during the bailout. He wrote up the particulars, and in due time the hero was awarded the Silver Star. My own father attended the ceremony in Florida with my father-in-law. I couldn't find a reference to it on the web, but I'm sure it's there somewhere.

The people who served in WWII, hero and coward alike, deserve our respect and appreciation for what they did and endured.

Whenever we go to visit he wears me out just keeping up with him.
