It's not true. GM's truck sales dropped off a cliff but car sales have picked up substantially, and with the smaller engines.

I'm certainly no expert and I know there are others on this board who are, so I hope they chime in on this topic.

My sense is that most N. Americans are quite sensitive to fuel prices. As a result, I think we see changes in automobile buying preferences long before $5.... in fact, the current elevated prices seem to be having impact... not a ground swell yet, but auto retailers are already noticing a heightened interest in fuel efficient cars. We shall see.
