If that had been the problem, I would have been sweltering this summer. Of course, this ain't Florida. Sweltering here ain't what sweltering is there. ;~)

BTW I have gotten all the responses to my grad school applications. It looks like I will be starting grad school this summer.

I thought it was $1K for a new AC. $3K sounds more like a new tranny.

Either way, it's not a trivial repair job.
