Karl Rove has run five smear campaigns in a row in each of his campaigns. The SMearVets were the 2004 version. Before that there was the smear against McCain, calling him a traitor, black prostitute lover, Anne Richards calling her an alcoholic lesbian, and the smaller races where he had innocent opponents put into prison and planted a bug in his own office then blamed it on the opponent. Karl Rove dirty tricks campaigns are never about truth. They're usually about the opposite of truth. They're designed to wound or destroy an opponent for his greatest strength, in Kerry's case honorable courage in battle and real life heroics vs. AWOL Bush who ran from war and lied about it.

Prove one SMEARVET LIE is true from a reliable independent source. Bet you can't. I've read the investigations. In every case the smearvet claims were quashed and contradicted by either men closer to the action, their own prior testimonies, by Navy records or by independent investigations. The only claim that can't be proven either way was the Cambodia story, but the LA Times said very clearly that if JK wasn't in Cambodia he was damn close, and since there are no border markers he might as well have been. Balls of steel are what JK had during the war. But to listen to the smearvets he was a coward and a traitor. Same thing they said about McCain in 2000.
