UPDATE 1-KLA-Tencor quarterly profit nearly doubles

SAN FRANCISCO, April 28 (Reuters) - KLA-Tencor Corp. (KLAC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) , the second-largest U.S. semiconductor capital equipment maker, on Thursday said quarterly net income rose 86 percent on the heels of increased spending on tools that prevent manufacturing defects.

Earnings in the fiscal third quarter reached $123.2 million, or 61 cents a share, compared to a year-earlier profit of $66.2 million, or 33 cents a share. Sales jumped to $541.6 million from $389.8 million in the same period last year.

The results topped the average Wall Street expectations of sales of $528.4 million and earnings of 56 cents a share, according to a poll of analysts by Reuters Estimates. Shares of KLA-Tencor, which is scheduled to provide an earnings outlook on a conference call beginning at 5:00 p.m. EDT, rose to $40.30 in after-hours trading on Inet from a close of $40.02 on Nasdaq.
