Hopefully fuel cell vehicles will be widely available by 2025. Transitioning to a fuel cell economy will not happen all at once. Fossil fuels including oil will be used to produce hydrogen in the medium term. The question becomes when will oil demand become higher than available production. Also important is when world oil production will peak. When peak production is reached, will affordable alternatives be in place? Transit buses are considered one of the best places to commercialize fuel cells. There are some fuel cell buses in service. The number is growing rapidly but is still a small percentage of transit vehicles. In 2003 an estimated 65 fuel buses were made worldwide. Say 400 will be made this year. It helps but it's a drop in the bucket. Other fleet vehicles would be next be because of centralized refueling. A fuel cell refueling infrastructure would be built gradually. Will fuel cell vehicles be affordable? Fuel cell vehicles will new vehicles. So most customers would have to pay new car prices to get one since used ones won't be readily available for awhile. Will enough people already have fuel cell powered vehicles? Mass production of fuel cell vehicles may be available around 2014.
