They told us that they would like to reprice again, but could not, because they had done so once, and if they were to do it again it would come straight off the bottom line. They came up with some other way to compensate us.

Ah, Dave Budde's post refreshed my memory.

IIRC, whatever company it was that I was working for at the time did, in fact, reprice the options twice. The second time they repriced them, the sale of the shares was restricted. The options could be exercised on their original vesting schedule, but could not be sold for a year after the repricing date. For some reason, this avoided having to take the repricing as an expense; don't ask me why.
