It sounds like you've never had to drive from Kinsale, Ireland to Cork. It looks like it would take about a half hour, and I'm sure it does, as the crow flies. But because the roads are so narrow and windy (and covered with sheep and cows on occasion) it takes at least two hours, and most people are carsick by the end of the journey. Of course I love tiny European roads and would trade them for freeways in a heartbeat, though.
