I think that vertical integration should be one of the main counter-arguments to the "commodity" complaints. It is NAND that is supposed to be the commodity. But how many semi companies ship finished products to retailers? Several people I know refer to their USB drives as "my Sandisk". If commodity status is a problem, that problem manifests itself in the Samsung / Lexar relationship (as Pam has repeatedly demonstrated). No matter how much prices are squeezed, the company that is milking margins from both silicon and card assembly -- not to mention gadgets like music players -- will have to be ahead.
