Erdman got suckered by Robert Vesco. The Swiss couldn't arrest Vesco because he was hiding in Latin America, so they arrested hapless Bernie Cornfeld and Paul Erdman. BTW, I thought Tommy Smothers was the perfect casting to play Erdman in the movie. Not a great flick, though.

I made a mistake in my comments on Jim Rogers's book on commodities. On page 79 he does mention the time in 1970 when he got wiped out shorting University Computing at $48. It peaked at exactly twice that. He also was short oil when the Iran-Iraq war broke out in 1980 but got out without too much damage.

I had a brush with the same thing by holding a very large short position in XLK starting in the middle of 1999. But I was able to make all the ensuing margin calls and when tech stocks finally cracked I ended up with a modest profit and even better got all the money back and was able to continue shorting the QQQs (as well as collecting on various LEAP puts).
