Self determination begins with a degree of self awareness that only comes with child like innocence (or successful psycho-therapy). Following that, one must make diligent efforts to establish a clear cut vision of one's purpose in life. Purpose is supported by a solid foundation of principle and commitment. Defining self determination as a goal for one's life begins there, but self mastery is required to make any progress. Self mastery has two major components that spring off of self awareness; it is the confidence and competence to say that 'I can and I will' succeed, followed by conduct that gives such a statement authenticity. Such an authentic statement becomes all encompassing in the life of the self-determined individual. Many people boast of accomplishments that are more likely the result of fortunate circumstances than anything that was truly a result of self-determination. Many people have skills and abilities (they can) to accomplish things but lack the motivational requirements (the will) to succeed. Many people are highly motivated but lack the other inate capabilities to see their visions move forward. Many people use popular terms like 'self-determination' without really having a clue what is entailed. Some people from the 'me' generation, just use it as more sophisticated language to mean 'gimme what ever I want.'
