SOB et al,

Actually this thread has become blather central. Go look at the last 200 posts and you will rarely find one that specifically might help anyone make or save a buck.

From SOB we have tomes and tomes of stuff, much of it conspiratorial or semi-conspiratorial in nature, which basically says the same thing over and over with more than a dollop of hoop and holler.

From the sensitive types we have complaints or backhanded compliments about SOB. These are the Days of Our Lives . . . Let's lose the soap opera, shall we?

We have gobs of regurgitated stuff from investment banks without a hint of independent analysis.

There are reams of posts about how much it might cost to build and where you might locate a refinery. (Last time I looked neither I nor anyone on this thread was, is or is ever likely to be involved in the planning, building or operating of a refinery. Even if someone, say Cricket, is project manager on a new refinery--this ain't the place to go over specs, etcetera.)

Finally we have the more than occasional, useless post of "Well, I'm glad I got fully loaded on my favorites last Thursday [temporary low--5 days ago]." And: "Boy oh boy, today's the kind of day [a plunge, as it turns out] that makes me glad I got out last Tuesday and am 90% cash." And "Well, I'm going to stay here because I'm up 30%/$15,000/beaucoup bucks since the last time I mentioned anything at all, or anything anyone could hold me to." As Elaine said in one of the more memorable Seinfeld's (concerning "The English Patient"): "Come on, a bathtub? Gimme something I can USE."

Since I believe 1) this thread is an investor-oriented thread and 2) the only way for people to make money in the stock market is to buy and then sell (or sell and then buy back) equities, or to buy calls or puts, or to simultaneously or asynchronistically buy and sell calls/puts/combinations of calls and puts, then it is clear to me that 95-98% of what is posted here is of little or no value to the main thrust of the central mission. In short, literally and figuratively, it ain't worth a dime.

Now, if some of that trivial 95-98% were actually entertaining or enlightening in some other way, that would be at least a small plus. Unfortunately, imho, it ain't.

As a cure, I would suggest that each post to this thread contain some sort of original current analysis or opinion on 1) a security and its probable direction/trend, 2) a buy/sell entry target, 3) a profit target and 4) an initial stop loss. This could be FA- or TA-based, and could also lead to valuable and interesting follow up Q&A about how one picks a security, a target and how one monitors and adjusts his position in the particular "campaign" on the underlying stock in question. A wider scope could permit posts as to more macro issues which can be reasonably expected to have an immediate to intermediate effect on the market for this small solar system of securities.

(I have endeavored to do this with XLE, OIH, RIG, NBR, and TOL and on DB's thread on TKLC IBM AIG, etc. DB does this daily and consistently on his thread.)

If I am wrong about the purpose and mission of Big Dog's room, I will be glad to take my medicine and will, in fact, go quietly. For right now this thread is not even meeting the minimum standards of Pareto Efficiency, as glossed by J.M Juran.
