Do the federal workers control the investments in this 401K program?

Do they invest the funds well? Do they make money? Are there failures?

I know we've had this conversation more than once before. The federal version of the 401K is called the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). It's a handful of basic funds: money market, S&P, bond, etc. You can move your money around however you like.

In at least one of our earlier discussions I mentioned that I doubt there are data on how well the investments are working for people but that I had no anecdotal info to indicate any problems. It's not like employees get do do anything very risky. We discussed the TSP earlier in the context that it has been mentioned as a model for how SS private accounts might be set up and managed.
