Current US policy has no precedent. Vietnam comes close, but even there we intervened in a civil war rather than creating one. The "<established meaning of isolationism, which is the opposite of militarism>" has no place here because we have never before sought to use military power on a global scale to unilaterally impose our will while disengaging politically and abandoning our former global political leadership role. We are indeed isolated -- and we chose that path of political disengagement and isolation to enable our military to be deployed without restraint of international law and without regard for the damage we are doing our own position in the international community nor the damage done to the community itself. If we continue we will destroy our role entirely.
