Well, at least with a wage tax, you're taxing the people who will someday benefit.

Not really. Some people will put a lot in and never get any money out. In the beginning some put almost no money in and got a lot out. People putting money in now might have to settle for getting less out than they put in, unless the difference is made up with income taxes. When the SS fund starts paying out more than it takes in the difference will come from income taxes and that is less than 20 years away. Other people get SS disability without having paid a lot in, and they might be eligible for retirement as well (I'm not sure).

Most current recipients either already have or eventually will get a lot more out than they put in. They probably will get less than what many investments would have given them if they had invested the money, but the money wasn't invested. They are getting money back now from current payers not from their own money. The idea is that people put in and then they take out, is more political than reality.

Tim

Social Security has been grossly distorted by including medical care for poor people of all ages and also financial support for disabled people of all ages (including drug addicts and alcoholics of all ages.)

Does anybody know whether it would still be solvent if we adhered to the original beneficiary scheme?
