KLP, With all of those kid that families had back in those days, also provided for more care for the old family members that were not able to care for themselves. They stayed away from hospitals, and doctors, as much as they could.

Those were the waning years of the American rugged individualism concept that built the nation. As you mention, that aspect of Americans has been left in the dust of the past. When candidates like FDR, and others, promised a car in every garage, and a chicken in every pot, it gave the message to the citizenry that they would not have to care for themselves, and big brother central government would handle all of their needs. The nation is now in the third, or fourth, generation of welfare families whose members have no intention of finding a job, or doing one thing for themselves. All of this places the nation on the brink of socialism. That scares me.
