You are correct again...this is the essence of the problem: You said: >>>>> Part of the problem is that we have the very good idea that people should be able to live their lives as they want,

but we also have the idea that everyone should get adiquate medical care which can conflict with the first idea.
<<<<<

I also see that I have been talking about the 2nd part of this. And that 2nd part seems to have two parts....

how to provide adequate care for those who are very poor and can't pay,

and the 2nd part....how those who can pay for adequate care, but don't, or don't want to...should be encouraged to either have some mandatory insurance, or have some sort of agreement with a credit card company or other source to pay their bill, and that entity will be paid back.

It doesn't seem fair at all for the hospitals and the doctors to continue not being paid, because some loaf needed treatment, but didn't make the choice to purchase insurance to help, or wasn't honest enough to pay his/her bill.

As a further thought...just watching the discussions here and other places on SI, makes me wonder how much attention that folks in the House and Senate have even put to the question of medical treatment and how to pay for it. Seems as if they are always in some meeting or another, and that very little time seems to be actually spent on just thinking about the problems and how they might be dealt with.
