I'm guessing you are having trouble hearing what they mean, not what they say. Big difference. There's a GEICO commercial that illustrates this perfectly. The wife comes up behind her husband who is sitting at the computer. "Honey," she says, "Does this dress make me look fat?" (She's not, of course.) Without looking up or really hearing what she meant, the man says, "You betcha." Cut to the man looking for the hide-a-bed. "In the time it takes to get out the hide-a-bed, you could be getting cheaper car insurance. GEICO."
