I have never driven to Alaska.

My biggest road trip was a hitchike in 1970, from Ann Arbor, where I was living, to Toronto then across the Trans Canada Highway to Vancouver, then down to San Francisco. From there I caught a ride with a friend's brother back to Ann Arbor.

A friend and I were stuck in Sudbury, Ont. for 3 days (not a very pleasant proposition - it was a mining town, with slag heaps everywhere - when we caught a ride with a guy from Montreal who was driving a VW Bug. We rode with him, and sundry other riders who we picked up along the way, all the way to San Francisco.
